The Joy of Sugar Baby Melons in August

from $750.00

Remember the carefree joy of summer days when you were young? This artwork expresses that playful summertime delight, showing the pure fun of growing and eating fresh food. A woman in a cheerful red halter top decorated with white apples takes a bite of a Sugar Baby watermelon she grew in her urban garden. The deep green striped melons rest on a cutting board beside bright orange and red nasturtium flowers and long green Armenian cucumbers. You can almost taste the sweet, crisp flesh of the watermelon and feel the cool, smooth rind in your hands. The vibrant coral red of the sliced melons contrasts beautifully with the glossy green skins and the soft petals of the edible flowers. The glass table reflects the abundance, doubling the visual feast. This is the essence of summer, celebrating the lighthearted pleasure that comes from growing food that nourishes both body and spirit.

To create this image I used lighting techniques borrowed from commercial photography to create a reflection on the glass table on my front porch to repeat the colors and shapes of the abundant harvest of melon, armenian cuke and natsturtiums. I opened the window on the front porch to include a soft focus view of the nearby homes, shrubs, and sign on the street corner because I wanted to convey the abundant harvest that can be grown in a small urban garden.
