Have you stood beneath raspberry or blackberry canes on a hot summer day, tasting berries straight from the vine while birds chatter at you from above? Imagine tasting a sweet and tart juicy berry as you stand surrounded by laden canes, their thorny branches heavy with berries in every stage from bright red to deep purple-black. The glossy berries catch the light beside serrated green leaves that create a canopy around you. You can almost feel the sun-warmed fruit bursting sweetly on your tongue and hear the scolding calls of bluejays claiming these berries as their own. This artwork intimately expresse the sensual pleasure of being immersed in the experience. “I was inspired to create the artwork because I noticed that every morning, when I picked the raspberries in my garden, the neighborhood blue jays would perch over my head on the power lines and make a huge racket! It was as if they were yelling at me, “Those are our raspberries! Go Away!” My pose was a bit of a taunt back at them! This artwork expresses the sensual enjoyment of the fruits of the garden. The raspberries are one of my favorite annual treats.”
