Watch the video to learn about the research that inspired the Glacial Waters series
In this body of work I traveled with climate scientists in Peru (White Mountains Region) and in the United States (Glacier National Park) and responded to what I learned from their research. I used a glass vessel filled with glacial melt water as a lens to photograph through. The water within encapsulated and reflected the scenes, creating a visual metaphor to express the fresh water resource issues associated with glacial recession due to climate change. Collectors who care about sustainable food systems say they love this artwork. Can you remember a moment when you held up a prize heirloom vegetable, marveled at its beauty and felt gratitude for the opportunity to nourish yourself with its unique flavors? This artwork captures that surge of pride mixed with gratitude, celebrating the abundance that comes from human cultivation of edible plants combined with the earth's generosity. Viewing this image, you can feel the sacred connection between the precious resource of fresh water, rich soil and the dedication that it takes to grow food for sustenance. In this image the brilliant colors of heirloom corn are reflected in the glacial melt water contained in a spherical crystal vessel held in human hands. Rich jewel tones of deep purple, burgundy, and golden yellow glow through the crystal-clear glass sphere, magnifying the stunning colors of heirloom Indian corn. The sphere catches and bends the light, creating an almost magical focal point that draws your eye to the intricate patterns of colorful kernels. Behind it all, the soft blur of corn stalks and green leaves frames the composition, with blue sky peeking through clouds. You can almost feel the cool air descending from the glaciated mountains above and smell the earthy scent of the corn patch. The interplay between the organic corn and the perfect geometry of the sphere creates something both grounded and transcendent. It calls attention to themes of water rights and the dependence of humanity upon a stable and balanced climate system.
Envision this vibrant artwork in your kitchen or dining space, where it becomes a year-round celebration of harvest abundance and the rewards of growing your own food. Your guests will be captivated by it, drawn to the jewel-like colors refracted through the sphere and curious about the story behind this unique perspective on heirloom corn. For gardeners, seed savers, and foodies like you, this piece speaks directly to your eco-conscious values of planetary care, sustainable living and your enjoyment of heirloom vegetables.
“I observed on the mountain sides in Peru below the high glaciers local people rely on the melt water during the hot dry season to grow corn among other crops. These glaciers used to be built up by snow in the wet season, but now due to global warming it rains on the glaciers. Rain does not build up the glaciers, it runs off into the streams, rivers and out to the ocean. As a result the glaciers are getting smaller every year. Adaptation to a world without glaciers acting as a natural water storage system will be required in the future. I made this photograph to highlight the relationship between people’s livelihood and the land.”
