Watch the video to learn about the research that inspired the Glacial Waters series
In this body of work I traveled with climate scientists in Peru (White Mountains Region) and in the United States (Glacier National Park) and responded to what I learned from their research. I used a glass vessel filled with glacial melt water as a lens to photograph through. The water within encapsulated and reflected the scenes, creating a visual metaphor to express the fresh water resource issues associated with glacial recession due to climate change. Glacial Waters no. 6
Do you know the feeling of standing before something so vast it quiets you completely? Imagine the thin, cool air of the Peruvian Andes filling your lungs, the crunch of ancient ice underfoot, and the silence of a glacier that has existed for millennia now visibly shrinking before your eyes. Ivana traveled into the White Mountains of Peru alongside a team of climate researchers from Ohio State University, and at the foot of Pastoruri Glacier, she held a glass sphere filled with glacial meltwater up to the scene. What she found inside that sphere stopped her: the entire glacier, inverted, suspended, and perfectly clear inside a vessel small enough to hold in one palm. The deep cobalt blues of the sky contrast against the bright whites of the ancient ice of the glacier in sharp focus within the sphere, while the dark rocky mountain and glacier atop it dissolve into a soft, luminous blur in the background. This image expresses the fragile beauty of something disappearing while it is still right in front of you.
Envision this awe-inspiring artwork as the centerpiece of your living room or study, where its quiet vastness sets the entire tone of the space. Guests will pause in front of it, leaning in toward the sphere before stepping back to take in the glacier beyond it. The conversation it will initate about our water, our planet, and what we still have time to protect, is a conversation worth having in your home. For collectors who love nature and feel the urgency of our changing climate, this piece does what the best art always does: it makes the invisible visible and the overwhelming intimate. It celebrates the stunning beauty of what we must not lose.
““Glacial Waters no. 6” depicts a near view of Pastoruri Glacier in Peru. My Glacial Waters series started in Peru with a two-week trek into the White Mountains of Peru with a group of researchers lead by a team from Ohio State University. This was the first glacier we visited, and the smallest due to it’s low altitute and thus warmer environment. Using the water within to encapsulate and reflect the scenes, I create a visual metaphor to express the water resource issues associated with glacial recession due to a warming planet. ”
