Watch the video to learn about the research that inspired the Glacial Waters series
In this body of work I traveled with climate scientists in Peru (White Mountains Region) and in the United States (Glacier National Park) and responded to what I learned from their research. I used a glass vessel filled with glacial melt water as a lens to photograph through. The water within encapsulated and reflected the scenes, creating a visual metaphor to express the fresh water resource issues associated with glacial recession due to climate change. Imagine reaching an emerald green glacial lake after a full day of hiking straight up a mountain in the Cordillera Blanca, your legs burning but your heart filled with satisfaction and gratitude. Can you imagine the thin, cold air in your lungs and the sound of a meltwater stream trickling by as wind sweeps across the rocky terrain? Picture the research team working nearby, measuring outflow to compare against prior years while you watch with curiosity and admiration for their dedication. The icy water runs clear and cold, fed by the white and blue glacier rising above, and you realize how fragile this entire system truly is. This artwork expresses the role humans have in protecting this fragile landscape. The glacier is reflected upside down in the glacial melt water contained inside crystal spherical vessel held in human hands. The gleaming white glacier reflects the intense sunlight against the cerulean blue sky. It's sharp focus within the crystal vessel contrasts against the soft focus emerald green meltwater lake and imposing mass of the glacier topped mountain. The crisp clarity of ice, water, and rock creates a composition of breathtaking beauty. This artwork expresses both the stunning magnificence of glacial ecosystems and their heartbreaking fragility, calling us to recognize the deep interconnectedness between humans and the nature we depend upon.
Envision this powerful artwork in your living room, family room, or office, where it serves as both beautiful landscape and urgent reminder of what climate change threatens. Guests pause before the crystal-clear water and pristine glacier, asking about the story behind this artwork. The piece connects to that universal concern for protecting what sustains us and the recognition that we must act before these vital water sources disappear. This artwork celebrates the beauty of glacial ecosystems while advocating for their protection.
“This artwork depicts one of the research glaciers we visited in the Cordillera Blanca and the meltwater lake below it. We were able to reach this after a whole day of hiking straight up. Here the researchers measured outflow from this lake to compare it to prior years’ data. They took water samples and told me stories about how meltwater lakes like these sometimes have strong outburst flows if the earth and rock holding them back is not stable enough. When this happens it causes destructive landslides that wipe out the animals, vegetation and sometimes homes in its path. This hazard is increasing in likelihood because of the increased rate of glacial melting due to global warming. I made this beautiful photograph to convey how fragile this environment is and how we must protect it.”
