Watch the video to learn about the research that inspired the Glacial Waters series
In this body of work I traveled with climate scientists in Peru (White Mountains Region) and in the United States (Glacier National Park) and responded to what I learned from their research. I used a glass vessel filled with glacial melt water as a lens to photograph through. The water within encapsulated and reflected the scenes, creating a visual metaphor to express the fresh water resource issues associated with glacial recession due to climate change. Glacial Waters no. 4
Glacial Waters no. 4
Imagine descending from the mountain summit after a long day of data collection on a high glacier in the Andes, your legs tired but your spirit exhilarated by what you've learned. Can you imagine the thin mountain air filling your lungs and the sound of wind mixing with your team's voices and the distinctive calls of the llama who carried your equipment? That is what Ivana experienced before making this photograph. Picture the exhaustion and gratitude she felt, causing her to pause in this late afternoon light to document this moment of collaboration between species. The crystal-clear water in the spherical vessel held in human hands reflects the pristine alpine glacier high above on the mountain where the research was conducted that day. It honors the partnership among the people and animals engaged in the search for scientific understanding. The rocky terrain contrasts with the glowing light on the soft fur of the llama. The white glacier rises in the blurred background while hands in the foreground hold the clear crystal sphere filled with glacial meltwater reflecting the mountains, meadow, and the watchful llama nearby. The llama's attentive gaze and proximity to the scientific work express the profound partnership between humans, animals, and nature in seeking knowledge. This artwork celebrates the collaboration required to study these vital glaciers and honors the ancient working relationship between people and llamas in the high Andes.
Envision this inspiring artwork in your study, living room, or office, where it sparks conversations about scientific fieldwork and the unexpected partnerships that make discovery possible. Guests notice the unusual composition reflected in the crystal sphere of water and ask about the story behind this artwork. The piece connects to that universal understanding that we cannot protect what we do not study, and we cannot study alone. This artwork celebrates the collaboration between species and the dedicated work of understanding our changing planet.
““Glacial Waters no. 4” depicts one of the target research glaciers from our encampment in Peru, with one of our pack animals, a llama. I took this in the late afternoon after our research team had decended the mountain after a long day of hiking and data collection at the summit of the glacier. I captured this image to show the importance of the glacier in this landscape and highlight the contribution of multiple species to the search for greater understanding of the region’s hydrology.”
