Watch the video to learn about the research that inspired the Glacial Waters series
In this body of work I traveled with climate scientists in Peru (White Mountains Region) and in the United States (Glacier National Park) and responded to what I learned from their research. I used a glass vessel filled with glacial melt water as a lens to photograph through. The water within encapsulated and reflected the scenes, creating a visual metaphor to express the fresh water resource issues associated with glacial recession due to climate change. Glacial Waters no. 3
Glacial Waters no. 3
Picture standing in a grass-filled valley high in the Peruvian Andes, feeling the wind in your hair and the soft mountain grass beneath your feet? Picture the thin air filling your lungs as sheep bleat in the distance and cows move nearby, their sounds mingling with the wind and a flowing stream. You hear the gentle presence of livestock that depend entirely on streams fed by glaciers you can see above you, and you realize how fragile this abundance truly is. The brown and orange tones of a cow's reflection shimmer within the clear glass sphere, contrasting against the sandy landscape colors in this striking composition. The sphere becomes a lens through which we see both the beauty of subsistence agriculture and the precarious thread connecting glacial ice to the families who depend on it for survival. This artwork expresses the profound interconnection between distant glaciers and the communities sustained by their seasonal melt, and the urgent need to reduce global warming to protect these natural reservoir systems before they vanish.
Envision this thought-provoking artwork in your living room, study, or office, where it sparks meaningful conversations about climate change and water security. Guests pause before the unexpected composition of the glass sphere and cow's reflection, asking about the story behind this artwork. The piece connects to that universal concern for our changing planet and the real human cost of glacial loss. This artwork celebrates the beauty of mountain ecosystems while advocating for the protection of the glacial waters that sustain entire communities.
“Glacial Waters No.3 depicts the subsistence agriculture practiced in the grass filled valleys below the glacier-capped mountains in Peru. As we hiked into the research sites, we observed individual families eking out a living from the landscape by herding sheep, alpaca, and cows. It was very clear that these people depend on the glaciers as a natural reservoir system to fill the streams and rivers during the dry season.”
