Glacial Waters no. 10

Imagine visiting the first glacier of your life and encountering the breaking edge, where chunks are losing their grip and falling off into a lake of meltwater below. The air is cool, the sun is blazing, and you hear the sound of water gurgling past in the stream that exits the lake. Ivana photographed Glacial Waters no. 10 at the breaking edge of the Pastoruri Glacier, one of the lowest altitude and now smallest glaciers in Peru due to a warming climate. She stood before ice that should have thickened in the wet season with snow, yet rain fell instead due to a warming climate, slid over its smooth surface, and rushed away down the stream. She made this photograph to express a fragile threshold, the moment when former accumulation becomes loss, and asks us to consider whether we will stop anthropogenic climate change or will we prepare for a world without glaciers? She scooped up the glacial meltwater in a spherical crystal vessel and held it up to reflect the breaking edge of the glacier. The cool blue whites of fractured ice contrast with the darker tawny bare rock in sharp focus inside the reflection. The meltwater lake covered in chunks of ice can be seen behind and below in soft focus, hinting at what is happening over time.

“Glacial Waters no. 10” depicts the breaking edge of the Pastoruri Glacier, which is among the lowest altitude glaciers in Peru, and the smallest due to global warming. During the wet season in these landscapes it used to snow on the glaciers, building them up. Now due to the warming climate, it rains more often than snows. Rain does not build up the glaciers; Rain runs off into the streams, lakes and rivers. The ultimate aims of the researchers include understanding how much water the ecosystem and its inhabitants need, planning for adaptation to a world without glaciers, and building accurate climate models for predicting the future climate.
