Watch the video to learn about the research that inspired the Glacial Waters series
In this body of work I traveled with climate scientists in Peru (White Mountains Region) and in the United States (Glacier National Park) and responded to what I learned from their research. I used a glass vessel filled with glacial melt water as a lens to photograph through. The water within encapsulated and reflected the scenes, creating a visual metaphor to express the fresh water resource issues associated with glacial recession due to climate change. Glacial Waters no. 19
Glacial Waters no. 19
Imagine reaching the apex of the Highline Trail in Glacier National Park Montana after a strenuous climb uphill. The view opens wide, with distant glinting glaciers contrasting against the vast cerulean blue Montana sky. The wind moves across the alpine grasses and through your hair carrying the clean scent of pine and sun warmed earth. Ivana created Glacial Waters no. 19 after hiking to this ridge in Glacier National Park with climate scientist Dan Fagre, observing how he returns to the same vantage points to document glacial retreat over time. What she learned about glaciers as naturally occurring freshwater reservoirs reshaped her vision, and this photograph reflects that expanded awareness. The pale blue and white bands of distant ice contrast with the deep green valleys below, while sharp ridgelines meet the soft gradation of open sky. The image of this pristine landscape reflected upside down in the spherical form of the crystal vessel filled with water held in human hands expresses both awe and accountability. By using water as a lens with which to view the landscape, she calls attention to our responsibility to steward this precious resource of fresh water by taking personal, local and society level actions to reduce global warming. By choosing the fragile spherical crystal vessel as the container to hold the water, she references the round form of the Earth itself and the fragility of Earth's hydrology and life-sustaining ecosystems.
Imagine this expansive artwork in your dining room or entry hall, where it creates a sense of elevation and calm. Guests are drawn to the sweeping horizon and often ask where the glaciers are located. The conversation shifts from travel memories to water security, to how mountain snowpack and ice influence farms, gardens, and rivers far beyond. Collectors who value seasonal food, thriving landscapes, and scientific insight tell Ivana that they feel a personal resonance with this perspective. The piece reflects the understanding that Ivana's collectors all share, that our well being is intimately interconnected and dependent upon the responsible sustainable stewardship of Earth's natural resources.
“I had the opportunity to hike with scientist Dan Fagre to observe him conduct research by taking repeated photographs, investigating the glacial change over time. What I learned from him about the glaciers’ role in providing fresh water for the landscape influenced my choices of what to photograph in the park.”
