Watch the video to learn about the research that inspired the Glacial Waters series
In this body of work I traveled with climate scientists in Peru (White Mountains Region) and in the United States (Glacier National Park) and responded to what I learned from their research. I used a glass vessel filled with glacial melt water as a lens to photograph through. The water within encapsulated and reflected the scenes, creating a visual metaphor to express the fresh water resource issues associated with glacial recession due to climate change. Glacial Waters no. 11
Glacial Waters no. 11
Can you imagine the feeling of stepping onto a high Andean bog that feels like a spongy, springy mattress beneath your footsteps? Ivana made Glacial Waters no. 11 after walking through this rare Peruvian ecosystem and realized that every tuft of plant life survives on meltwater flowing down from the glaciers above. Picture yourself inhaling the clean, mineral scent of wet earth while wind moves softly across the bog, knowing that if the glaciers vanish, this living carpet will quietly fade with them. Ivana filled the spherical crystal vessel with glacial meltwater and held it up to the scene to reflect the dense clusters of yellow and green plants pressed tightly together in velvety mounds, their soft textures contrasting with the blue sky and undulating earth tones of the mountain above the valley. The harmonious earthy colors contrast with the blue sky, expressing both nourishment and fragility in a single frame.
Envision this serene artwork in your study or dining room, where its colors bring the vastness of the landscape indoors during every season. Guests lean in to understand the reflection, and the conversation turns to water, stewardship, and the delicate ecosystems that need stewardship to maintain their harmonious balance. Collectors who value environmental stewarship and sustainability recognize their own ethics mirrored here. The piece becomes more than décor. It becomes a statement of care and awareness. It celebrates the invisible threads that connect glaciers, soil, plantlife and climate stability.
“ This unique bog landscape in Peru feels like a spongy springy mass underfoot. The tight clusters of plants are fed by the melting glaciers in the mountains above. Bogs are known to be effective at sequestering carbon and preventing it from entering the atmosphere. Using water within to encapsulate and reflect the scenes, I create a visual metaphor to express the glacial loss and the associated freshwater resource issues caused by a warming planet. I made this photograph because I recognized that this entire ecosystem depends on the flow of water from the glaciers during the warm dry season. If the glaciers disappear, so will this ecosystem.”
