Watch the video to learn about the research that inspired the Glacial Waters series
In this body of work I traveled with climate scientists in Peru (White Mountains Region) and in the United States (Glacier National Park) and responded to what I learned from their research. I used a glass vessel filled with glacial melt water as a lens to photograph through. The water within encapsulated and reflected the scenes, creating a visual metaphor to express the fresh water resource issues associated with glacial recession due to climate change. Glacial Waters no. 13
Glacial Waters no. 13
Could you picture standing at a distance from Pastoruri Glacier and realizing that what you see is only a fraction of what once filled the valley? Ivana created Glacial Waters no. 13 to express that quiet recognition, because this low altitude glacier has shrunk dramatically under a warmer climate. Picture yourself breathing in the thin mountain air and hearing only wind across stone, while the remaining ice sits small and exposed against the vast landscape. Ivana filled a spherical crystal vessel with glacial meltwater, and one of the scientists on her research team held it up to reflect the pale blue-white of the distant glacier. It contrasts with the muted browns and greys of the surrounding rocky slopes, and the smooth reflective surface of the glass clearly renders the rough texture of the rock. The composition expresses scale and absence at the same time, revealing how loss can be both beautiful and unsettling.
Envision this contemplative artwork in your living room or office, where its spacious horizon creates a sense of calm that slowly deepens into reflection. Guests often step closer, trying to locate the glacier within the expanse, and that moment of searching opens an honest conversation about climate change and responsibility. Collectors who value nature, travel, and environmental stewardship recognize themselves in that pause. The piece affirms your identity as someone who pays attention to subtle shifts that matter. It celebrates awareness and the courage to witness transformation.
““Glacial Waters no. 13” depicts a distant view of Pastoruri Glacier in Peru, one of the lowest altitude and the smallest glacier we visited. I wanted to highlight how much it has already melted because of the warmer climate at low altitude.”
