“If you've ever felt that deep sense of belonging and interconnection when you're surrounded by nature, you already understand what inspires my art."
When you live with one of my artworks, I want it to remind you of the joy you find in nature while deepening your connection to the earth we all share.
I create to illuminate those moments when experiences in nature fill you with wonder and awe. I grew up with my hands in the soil and the rhythms of the forests and rivers in my bones. My father's garden was my first classroom. There I learned that every handful of seeds connects us to something larger than ourselves. This experience led to appreciation for growing and eating seasonal healthy food. On our river rafting, hiking and camping trips I developed a sense of awe of the interconnectedness of all living beings. My photography and mixed media artworks celebrate the interconnected web of life that sustains us all. Through my art, I hope to bring into your home the same sense of wonder and belonging that inspires my artworks.
Every choice I make in my studio reflects the values we share.
Your values deserve art created with integrity. I source recycled materials, use non-toxic processes, and frame my works in hardwood from sustainably managed North American forests. When you bring one of my artworks into your home, you can feel good knowing it was created with the same respect for nature that inspired it.
Inspiring and mentoring the next generation of artists to create artworks with sustainable materials and practices is a great source of joy.
I hold an M.F.A. degree from the joint program of The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston/Tufts University. I have taught at a Massachusetts state university since 2003. I offer courses in black and white analog photography, historical processes, digital photography, mixed media art, use of natural plant based pigments for textiles and watercolors, video, animation, digital art, business of visual arts, and sustainability concepts.
In this time of environmental crisis I believe civic involvement and advocacy at the local level is a powerful personal action that we can all do to make a difference.
Since I was a teenager, I have been involved in civic advocacy on environmental protection. With other teens, I raised money to contribute to the creation of the Children’s Forest preserve in Costa Rica. I planted trees in a massive tree planting campaign on Mount Mitchell in western North Carolina which had been ravaged by acid rain. I led a youth weekly letter writing campaign to state senators on environmental issues at my high school. I continue civic involvement by volunteering for the BSU community garden which provides free food through the campus food bank. I serve on the advisory board for the BSU sustainability program which offers environmental education for students. As a Sierra Club member I participate in local environmental advocacy events at the Massachusetts state house.
I have exhibited my artwork widely because I believe that art is tool
that can encourage reflection and increase understanding about the world we share.
I have exhibited my artworks and short films in over 50 national juried and invitational exhibitions over 25 years including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Flash Forward Photography Festival, The Griffin Museum, Panopticon Gallery, Newspace Center for Photography, CAC in Las Vegas, Soho Photo Gallery, Dallas Video Festival, Junction Arts Festival and the Danforth Museum. I have completed artist in residency fellowships at the Vermont Studio Residency Center, 5 Belles Farm, and Oolite Arts. I have been the recipient of numerous grants for the creation of artworks. My artwork has been featured in in the Boston Globe, Orion Magazine, the Las Vegas Sun, Atlanta's Creative Loafing as well as several blogs.
I feel grateful for the opportunities I have had to inspire people like you
with my artworks at these exhibitions and events.
In my free time I love to travel to state and national parks, and participate in many outdoor adventure sports such as cross country skiing, biking, kayaking, hiking and rock climbing. I enjoy growing vegetables, cooking, and eating gourmet food with friends and family.
