Glacial Waters no. 9

from $750.00

Can you imagine the thin, cold air of the Peruvian Andes filling your lungs as you climb toward a glacier that is quietly retreating year after year? Ivana photographed Glacial Waters no. 9 on that very trail, carrying a spherical crystal water bowl that became a lens on the landscape to create a visual metaphor for the role humans can play in stopping global warming. Picture yourself pausing, hearing only wind over stone, and looking through still water that reflects the glacier upside down, fragile and luminous. The icy whites and light blues shimmer against the darker earth tones, the glossy reflection in sharp focus contrasting with the soft-focused mountain terrain beyond. In that inversion, beauty and warning exist together, and the work quietly asks where climate change appears in your own life.

One of the research glaciers in Peru is reflected in the water bowl. I photographed “Glacial Waters no. 9” on the trail up the mountain to reach the glacier. Using water within to encapsulate and reflect the scenes, I create a visual metaphor to express the glacial loss and the associated fresh water resource issues caused by a warming planet. The mode of production references the mechanical aspects of photography and vision; the bowl acts as a lens reflecting the landscapes upside down.
