Watch the video to learn about the research that inspired the Glacial Waters series
In this body of work I traveled with climate scientists in Peru (White Mountains Region) and in the United States (Glacier National Park) and responded to what I learned from their research. I used a glass vessel filled with glacial melt water as a lens to photograph through. The water within encapsulated and reflected the scenes, creating a visual metaphor to express the fresh water resource issues associated with glacial recession due to climate change. Glacial Waters no. 12
Glacial Waters no. 12
Picture the dry season in the Andes, when the air feels thin and dusty, and you are driving up a winding road past small farmsteads. You get out of the car to take a break and see this small field of wheat growing next to someone's home. Ivana created Glacial Waters no. 12 in the Cordillera Blanca, inspired by witnessing how entire communities depend on glacier runoff to grow small plots of wheat, quinoa, corn, and vegetables. Imagine yourself hearing the soft rustle of grain heads in the wind and smelling sun-warmed soil, knowing that every plant survives because ice high above is slowly releasing its stored water. The golden ochre of cultivated fields contrasts with the cool blue sky reflections held in the bowl. The image expresses a simple truth that feels both ancient and urgent, which is that agriculture, water rights, and human survival begins in the mountains where snowpack and glaciers play a vital role.
Envision this grounded and thought provoking artwork in your dining room, where meals made from seasonal produce are shared with family and friends. Guests notice the reflection of the wheat field and ask about the story behind the artwork. When you shar it the conversation shifts to stewardship, fairness, and the origins of the food on their plates. Collectors who garden, bake bread, and support local farmers feel a deep alignment with this artwork. The piece affirms your identity as someone who understands that beauty and responsibility belong together. It celebrates our shared dependence on the land and the water that sustains it.
““Glacial Waters no. 12” records the mountainsides below the glaciers in the Cordillera Blanca in Peru, people grow food crops including wheat. The meltwater from the glaciers serves as the primary water source during the dry season. I made the image to evoke themes of water rights, agriculture, and the dependency of people upon the environment.”
