Watch the video to learn about the research that inspired the Glacial Waters series
In this body of work I traveled with climate scientists in Peru (White Mountains Region) and in the United States (Glacier National Park) and responded to what I learned from their research. I used a glass vessel filled with glacial melt water as a lens to photograph through. The water within encapsulated and reflected the scenes, creating a visual metaphor to express the fresh water resource issues associated with glacial recession due to climate change. Glacial Waters no. 1
Glacial Waters no. 1
When you stand atop mountains, you experience moments that feel expansive and profoundly connected to something to something much much bigger than yourself, the natural world. Imagine that profound experience of surveying this vast glaciated mountain range reflected within the water held in a crystal vessel held up against the expansive sky. This artwork honors the stewardship role that humans can play in maintaining a stable climate and healthy ecosystems. The lush color reproduction in this composition brings to life the brilliant blue sky, glacier covered peaks and white clouds reflected within the glass spherical vessel, while the rugged mountain landscape stretches beyond in soft focus. The round form of the water vessel echoes the round form of the Earth itself, the water acts like a lens, and the gesture of holding it in human hands draws attention to the need for environmental stewardship of the precious resource of fresh water. Each element works together to express the beauty and fragility of these precious mountain ecosystems, where glaciers have shaped the land and continue to nourish life through the meltwater in the streams and rivers.

“Before going on the trek I hired a taxi driver to take me up on an adjacent mountain range so I could capture the grand scale of the many glaciers that comprise the Cordillera Blanca and thier importance to the ecosystems and people living in the valleys and downstream. The image reflected in the water in the vessel held in human hands is meant to show the responsibility for humans to steward the climate and environment so that all living beings can thrive.”
