Watch the video to learn about the research that inspired the Glacial Waters series
In this body of work I traveled with climate scientists in Peru (White Mountains Region) and in the United States (Glacier National Park) and responded to what I learned from their research. I used a glass vessel filled with glacial melt water as a lens to photograph through. The water within encapsulated and reflected the scenes, creating a visual metaphor to express the fresh water resource issues associated with glacial recession due to climate change. Do you know the feeling of watching someone with their hands and sensing, in that moment, that you are witnessing something intimate and personal? Imagine the warm smell of hay and animals, the soft sound of milk hitting a pail, and the wind moving through a high Andean valley where life moves at the pace of the seasons. High in the mountains of Peru, Ivana spotted a woman milking her cow on a small hillside farm and asked if she could photograph her working. That simple, respectful exchange produced this image. The action of milking into the bright green bucket is in sharp focus, reflected upside down inside the crystal spherical vessel filled with glacial melt water held in human hands. This contrasts the soft focus of the creamy white flank of the cow, the red trousers of the woman kneeling beside the cow, and the golden grasses beyond them. This image honors the dependence of these subsistence farmers upon the glacial waters that flow down from the mountains above. This image expresses the quiet, unbreakable bond between people, animals, and the land that feeds them both.
Envision this tender artwork in your dining room or kitchen, where its warmth and intimacy feel entirely at home. Guests who love food, farming, and the land will stop and lean in when they notice the reflection inside the sphere, and ask about the story behind this unusual composition. For collectors who feel connected to the earth and the people who tend it, this piece celebrates a way of living that is both timeless and urgently worth remembering. It is a quiet reminder of what sustains humanity.
“I observed on the mountain sides in Peru below the high glaciers local people grazing small holdings of sheep and cattle. I observed a woman milking her cow in and asked her if I could photograph her working. I made this photograph to highlight the relationship between people’s livelihood and the land.”
