I invite you to attend the exhibition “Mementos of Celebration” featuring my artwork at the historic Old Town Hall in Salem, MA from July 12- August 3, 2008. The opening reception is Friday July 11th from 7pm-9pm. The Old Town Hall is located at 32 Derby Square between Essex and Front streets in Salem, MA. The exhibit is in conjunction with an exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) titled “Wedded Bliss: The Marriage of Art and Ceremony.” The curator of the PEM exhibit also juried “Mementos of Celebration.” More information for both exhibits can be found at www.salemartsassociation.org and www.pem.org
My artwork on display is a single piece that is not part of a series. It celebrates the wisdom and fair-mindedness of the four Massachusetts supreme-court justices who wrote the majority opinion that made marriage equality a reality for same-sex couples in Massachusetts. The artwork is a photomontage using imagery of balanced scales and mythological references to the ancient Egyptian story of judgment upon death. The Plexiglas in the frame is etched with a synopsis of the majority opinion written by the court explaining why it is unconstitutional to deny same-sex couples the right to marry in Massachusetts. Since this artwork is not part of an ongoing series, it will not appear on my website. If you want to see it you have to go to the show. I hope to see you there! |
