ARTIST STATEMENT
This work is comprised of black and white spy camera footage taken from my boob-cam. The boob-cam is a leopard print dress that I built that has hidden spy cameras in the apex of the breasts. This video takes place in a mall and features 37 men and 26 women who look at me or directly into the boob-cam without noticing it. Every time someone looks into the camera, the footage pauses, and their gaze is punctuated by a sound such as applause or laughter. This work uses humor to comment on issues of power in the gaze, surveillance and gender performance. At the bottom of the video image are two lines of ticker-tape text that move across the screen. This text provides analysis of who looked according to categories of age, race, and gender, as well as commentary of my thoughts from that day.

This video is shown on a small (3.5”x 4.25”) monitor that is inset 9” into a wall at 4.5’ up from the floor. This installation forces the viewer to crouch down and peer into the white tunnel in order to view the monitor. This forces the viewer into the role of a voyeur, which adds to the content of the work. The speakers are hidden behind the fabric walls of the tunnel, so as to be heard but not seen.
