I believe in the power of the sublime photograph to inspire values of environmental conservation and the protection of green spaces. I use the otherworldly qualities of infrared photography to capture and share the awe I feel in these landscapes, both wild and manipulated. I visit these breathtaking places as a traveler, hiker, rock climber, cyclist, and kayaker.
Infrared photography extends human vision into the realm of the invisible by making photographs with light rays that humans cannot see. Because of this quality, I create dramatic images that make visible that which would otherwise remain invisible. I use medium format and large format film rather than digital photography to obtain very high image resolution, which allows me to make very large and detailed prints. Since I use film, the images from every trip provide discoveries when I process the film and contact sheets in the darkroom. This is because the amount of infrared light changes dramatically at various latitudes and different subjects reflect infrared light in varying amounts. Since I cannot see what the film records, there are always interesting surprises. This process of discovery is part of the pleasure of working with this medium.
